Focus 1:
Support

Support artists who endorse the boycott of Israel, whether it is not selling their work in Israel or not including Israel in their tour.

There are plenty of artists who have expressed support for the BDS movemet and/or Palestine and we should show them some aroha (love). We have included some examples bellow, and you can find Aotearoa artists who support a ceasefire on Artists 4 Ceasfire.

Focus 2:
boycott

Boycott artists coming to New Zealand who are complicit and openly support Israel occupation.

Does your favourite artist support Israel occupation?
If they do, call on them to stop and consider boycotting their work. If it’s music, only listen to already bought or second-hand copies of their music and avoid listening on streaming platforms. Avoid purchasing any new merchandise and consider not wearing any merch you currently own until they reverse their support for Israel.

  • Jerry Seinfeld is an American actor who is openly supportive of Israel. He visited Tel Aviv and tweeted himself enjoying a falafel wrap not too far away from the unfolding genocide in Gaza. Seinfeld is planning two shows in Spark Arena, Auckland on 24 and 26 June. Sign the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/cancel-jerry-seinfeld-new-zealand-2024-tour

Sign petitions, advocate

Sign petitions to inform organisers of cultural and music events that artists who support Israel occupation are not welcome in Aotearoa.

Advocate for boycotting their events if they go ahead.

  • In 2024, more than 3000 people signed a petition calling on WOMAD NZ to exclude Ziggy Marley from the March 15-17, 2024 lineup. The organisers halaو Aotearoa, Artists for ceasefire and Aotearoa for ceasefire found that Marely’s actions in 2018, when he and several other celebrities performed at a fundraiser in Los Angeles, raised over $60 million for the Israeli Defense Force.
    See the petition here.

    The petition stated:

“The Israeli Defense Force has been implicated in numerous human rights violations against Palestinians. According to Human Rights Watch, Israeli troops killed well over 2,000 Palestinian civilians during three Gaza conflicts alone (2008-09, 2012, and 2014). Furthermore, Al Jazeera reports that since October 7th, 2023, at least 24,100 Palestinians have been killed, over 10,000 being children and another 60,834 injured according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
By inviting Ziggy Marley to perform at their festival, WOMAD NZ is indirectly endorsing these actions. We believe this goes against the spirit of peace and unity that music festivals should promote. Therefore we urge WOMAD NZ and all their partners and sponsors to reconsider their decision and remove Ziggy Marley from their lineup for March 15-17th, 2024.

And we encourage those signing to email WOMAD NZ directly at: info@womad.co.nz or Suzanne Porter - Event director and CEO at: suzanne@taft.co.nz.”
